Fall in Argentine Agricultural Production and Exports in 2009
According to the latest official estimates, the Argentine production of foodgrains and the oilseeds in 2009 is projected to be 76.4 million tons (MT), down from 94.7 MT in 2008 and 96 MT in 2007. Exports in 2009 are expected to decline to 54.2 MT in comparison to 71.4 MT in 2008.
Wheat has suffered a 50% fall in production from 16 MT in 2008 to 8.4 MT in 2009. The fall in corn production is 45%, from 22 MT in 2008. Sunflower production will be down to 2.5 MT in 2009 from 4.6 MT in 2008. Production of soy in 2009 is likely to fall by 20% to 43.8 MT as against 50 MT in 2007.
The fall in production is mainly due to the unusual drought witnessed in many parts of Argentina as well as due to the disruption caused last year by the conflict between the Government and the farmers on the issue of increase in export duties. Although the Government has agreed to the demand of the farmers not to increase export duties further, the basic import duties imposed in 2007 continues. The exports duty in the case of soy is 35%, wheat 23%, maize 20% and sunflower 32%. But despite this, Argentine prices are globally competitive.
The fall in Argentine agricultural production and exports would cause increase in prices domestically and globally. This will have its impact on our import of soy oil and sunflower oil which have become regular imports in recent years. In 2008, our imports of soy oil was US $ 646 million and sunflower oil US $ 56 million.
